Turkey extends state of emergency for 4th time

Turkish Parliament decided on Monday to ratify the government's motion to extend the state of emergency for three more months. The bill, that will come into effect on Wednesday, is the fourth extension since Turkey declared the state of emergency on July 20 last year following a failed coup attempt of July 15 which left 250 people killed and thousands more injured.

Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Nurettin Canikli stated in a speech before the Parliament that fundamental freedoms and basic rights and liberties will not be restricted under the measure. During the state of emergency, the president has a constitutional right to issue decrees, bypassing routine legislative procedures.
