Wall Street ends sharply higher on Mnuchin remarks
Stocks in the United States closed with significant gains on Thursday after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the a "major tax reform" plan will be presented "very soon." Investors digested corporate earnings from Verizon, Philip Morris and Blackstone and awaited the quarterly results from Visa due after the bell.
The Dow Jones climbed 0.85%. American Express soared 5.92% after it reported EPS of $1.34 in the first quarter of 2017.
The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.81% to hit a record closing level. Railroads company CSX ascended 5.60% after its quarterly report said it expects its earnings per share to jump 25% in 2017.
The S&P 500 increased 0.76%. Alliance Data surged 8.30%.
The euro edged up 0.08% against the dollar to sell for 1.0720 and the pound gained 0.32% compared to the US currency to go for 1.2822 at 10:18 pm CET.
