White House supports military draft of women
The White House announced its support for requiring women to register for the U.S. military draft on Friday.
After about a year of deliberation, the Obama administration decided to back the shift in the U.S. Selective Service. An act of Congress is required to institute such a change. White House National Security Council spokesman Ned Price explained that it seems “logical” the step would be made at this time, due to a removal of previous barriers to military service for women. He also reiterated the U.S. army's commitment to having volunteer-only forces.
Under current law, all adult men must register for the draft, while women aren’t required to, even though they can volunteer to serve in the military.
