3 killed in Austrian avalanche, one missing

Austrian police said that an avalanche in western Austria killed three German skiers and left a fourth person missing, according to various media reports on Sunday.

The bodies of the three men, aged between 32 and 57, were recovered on Saturday evening close to the ski resort of Lech near the border with Liechtenstein after the wife of one of the skiers reported that they were missing. Police also said that they had to abandon their search for the fourth member of the group due to heavy snow and the risk of avalanches.

Austria along with large parts of Europe experienced severe weather in the course of the previous week. Over 20 people across the continent died as a result and travel and transport links in several countries were greatly impaired.
