AstraZeneca vaccine 70% efficient on average - new analysis

The coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University is both "safe and efficient," with an efficacy rate of about 70% on average in preventing the virus, according to researchers who analyzed the data.

According to the results published in the medical journal The Lancet on Tuesday, the interim results that caused some confusion about the COVID-19 vaccine candidate last month have been confirmed. The vaccine is efficient 70% on average, while it can go as low as 62% and as high as 90%, depending on dosage.

"The results show that the vaccine is effective against Covid-19, with in particular no severe infections and no hospitalizations in the vaccine group, as well as safe and well-tolerated," AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot commented.
