Dexamethasone reduces COVID-19 mortality rate - Oxford

The latest research conducted by Oxford University suggests that a steroid drug dexamethasone, which costs just £5, reduces the death chance from COVID-19 in patients on ventilators by a third and in patients on oxygen by one fifth.

If the research results turn out to be a breakthrough in the treatment of the COVID-19, it will mean that dexamethasone is the only drug that can reduce the disease mortality rate. The trials, as announced by United Kingdom Health Secretary Matt Hancock on Tuesday, were completely funded by the government.

According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, dexamethasone is a type of corticosteroid medication used in the treatment of many conditions, including rheumatic problems, skin diseases, severe allergies and asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, croup, brain swelling, ocular pain following ophthalmic surgery, and along with antibiotics in tuberculosis.
