EU to buy 300 million doses of Pfizer vaccine

The European Union authorized a contract for 300 million doses of the BioNTech- and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement on Tuesday, describing the vaccine as "the most promising" one to be created until now.

"Once this vaccine becomes available, our plan is to deploy it quickly, everywhere in Europe. This will be the fourth contract with a pharmaceutical company to buy vaccines. And more will come. Because we need to have a broad portfolio of vaccines based on different technologies. We have already started working with Member States to prepare national vaccination campaigns," the EU official said.

Von der Leyen's comments and the vaccine contract approval come after the two companies announced their vaccine showed a 90% efficiency in a late-stage trial.
