McConnell blocks swift approval of $2,000 checks

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's attempt to pass $2,000 coronavirus stimulus checks by unanimous consent on Tuesday.

However, Democrats are still expected to try and force a vote on increasing direct payments from $600 to $2,000 later in the day.

All 48 Democrats and the independents who caucus with them are likely to vote for the increase should the Senate consider the bill, which already passed the House. The bill would still need support from 12 Republicans, 5 of which have already stated they favor the move.
