UK retail sales up 1.5% in September

The number of goods bought in retail sales across the United Kingdom increased by 1.5% in September compared to the previous month, the Office for National Statistics reported on Friday. The monthly increase topped estimates, achieving growth for the fifth month in a row and soaring past the pre-crisis level seen in February.

In the quarter to September, retail sales volumes jumped 17.4% against the previous trimester to score the largest quarterly increase on track. However, fuel and clothing sales were still significantly lower compared to February, mostly due to reduced travel as people continued to work from home.

The proportion of online sales stood at 27.5%, which is almost higher by a third compared to pre-pandemic levels.
