Vaccine could be released early if trials are positive - Fauci

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci told KHN in an interview there is a chance of the COVID-19 vaccine trials ending earlier in the event of "overwhelmingly" positive results.

The infectious disease expert noted the Data and Safety Monitoring Board has the authority to stop trials weeks in advance in case of largely positive or negative data and that the researchers would be morally obligated to make a vaccine accessible as soon as it proves safe.

"If you are making a decision about the vaccine, you’d better be sure you have very good evidence that it is both safe and effective," Fauci added. "All of that has to be transparent," he concluded.
