Afghan forces, Taliban fight for control over Ghazni

Authorities said on Sunday that more than eighty servicemen have died in the three-day battle with Taliban insurgents in Ghazni in central Afghanistan, while that 11 troops died in attacks in the Faryab province in the northeast on an army base. Local officials have complained about the military's inability to send reinforcements, while Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, chief of staff, denied the seventh-largest city is in danger of falling into insurgents' hands.

Communication with Ghazni is difficult as infrastructure has been damaged, according to reports. There was a fire at the police headquarters amid the fighting but the army rebuffed claims that the government has lost control over the main points in the provincial capital. Some witness accounts put the number of dead at more than a hundred. United States warplanes struck several locations.
