AKK confirms Trump's tariff threat to EU over Iran

German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer confirmed on Thursday that United States President Donald Trump threatened European countries with auto tariffs unless her country, France and the United Kingdom increased pressure on Iran over its violations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"The threat was in the room," Kramp-Karrenbauer said in London where she met her British counterpart Ben Wallace. However, the German minister insisted her country will not support Trump's "course of maximum pressure" against Tehran.

Earlier, media reports claimed Trump told the three EU countries they need to blame Iran for reducing JCPOA commitments if they don't want their auto imports to be targeted by a 25% tariff. Iranian Foreign Minister then slammed the European nuclear deal signatories for "selling out" the nuclear deal by triggering a dispute resolution mechanism as a result of the threat.
