Al-Shabaab bombs, captures hotel in Somalia

Islamist rebels in Jubaland in Somalia's south said on Friday that they targeted Hotel Asasey in the center of the port city of Kismayu with a suicide attack and that they took over the facility. After a bomb was heard, a gun battle between Al-Shabaab fighters and security units started. The police said members of the war-torn country's parliament were holding a meeting with local leaders in the hotel.

Witnesses claimed they heard hand grenades go off. The region is preparing for elections scheduled for next month. A news report at least a dozen people died including a well-known Somali television journalist and Senator Ahmed Hashi. The militants' propaganda arm claimed they also killed "a white man."
