Aldi to invest £1.3B in UK, create 2,000 new jobs

German discount supermarket chain Aldi has pledged on Monday to invest £1.3 billion over the next two years in order to "further accelerate its share of the United Kingdom grocery market."

The investment plan is expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs throughout the next year, adding to the 7,000 created in the previous two years. Aldi is also planning to open 100 new stores across the UK and expand its logistics infrastructure.

In an annual trading update, Aldi reported that its UK and Ireland sales grew 10.2% to hit a record £13.5 billion. "Whilst the cost of responding to the pandemic dampened profits, our decision to return business rate relief was the right thing to do," said Chief Executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland Giles Hurley.
