Almost $1B rasied for Notre Dame repair

France's President Emmanuel Macron's appointee for raising funds for national heritage, Stephane Bern, said on Wednesday that €880 million ($995 million) has been raised so far for the reconstruction of the Notre Dame Cathedral which was badly damaged in a fire on Monday. Later in the day, the president will hold a special Cabinet meeting to discuss the unfortunate event, treated as an accident by the authorities.

The contributions came mostly from domestic and American companies, including Kering, LVMH, Total and Apple, as well as personal donations from believers around the world.

Macron said yesterday he expects that the house of worship will be rebuilt to be "even more beautiful" within five years.
