American Airlines to furlough 19K as aid bill talks fail

American Airlines is set to go on with its plan to furlough 19,000 employees on Thursday after the Democrats and Republicans were unable to bridge their differences and reach an agreement on the country's next coronavirus stimulus bill, the carrier's CEO Doug Parker stated on Wednesday.

The Fort Worth-based airline stands ready to recall furloughed workers in case the two sides agree on the aid package to support US carriers that were devastated by plunging travel demand amid the pandemic, Parker added.

Earlier today, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stressed he will not accept a $2.2 aid bill proposal made by the Democrats. He is set to continue talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday to make another push towards finding an agreement.
