Apple disputes Spotify's complaint with EC

Apple Inc. has denied allegations Spotify made against the tech giant, claiming it only charges a 15% fee on only 680,000 out of the streaming service's 100 million premium users, Der Spiegel reported on Monday citing Apple's response to a complaint Spotify filed with the European Commission. The tech giant insisted the 30% fee is not charged on any users as Spotify had claimed.

Apple noted the 30% fee requirement affects users who signed up to the premium service using the App Store billing system between 2014 and 2016 and decreased to 15% on subscription purchases after one year. It noted that the fee was halved for all 680,000 affected users as they have all been paying for the service for over a year.

In March, Spotify filed the complaint, alleging the Cupertino-based tech giant is giving its music service an "unfair advantage" by forcing Spotify users to pay a 30% tax on purchases made through Apple's payment system. The Commission stated it will decide whether to launch an investigation into Apple after it receives a response from the tech giant. Apple reportedly submitted the response in late May but it was not made public.
