Asia trades mostly lower with focus on China-US ties

Stock exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region traded mostly lower on Thursday after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen reportedly arrived in the United States, with the visit expected to spark new tensions between Beijing and Washington. Elsewhere, Alibaba executives said on an investor call that the company will make a decision on maintaining control over the six newly-separated business units after they go through the initial public offering (IPO) process.

The Nikkei 225 decreased by 0.77% at 4:03 am CET. The Shanghai Composite was down 0.10% at 4:06 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite Index declined 0.11% at 4:23 am CET. The Hang Seng lost 0.32% at 4:24 am CET. The Kospi in South Korea was 0.38% higher at 4:21 am CET. The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia gained 1.02% at 4:25 am CET.

The dollar was down 0.22% compared to the Japanese yen at 4:26 am CET, trading for 132.577.
