Asia tumbles as China grapples with COVID

Major stock indexes in Asia-Pacific slumped on Monday, as the world's second-largest economy, China, continued to struggle with taming the COVID-19 pandemic, with protests over the handling of the situation spreading across the country. The virus cases hit a new daily high.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite slid 1.34% at 7:03 am CET, while the Shenzhen Composite decreased 1.25% a minute later. At 7:05 am CET, South Korea's Kospi Composite tumbled 1.43%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged 2.09% simultaneously.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.42% at the close. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 0.42% as well at 7:00 am CET. At 7:07 am CET, the dollar traded 0.56% lower against the yen, selling for 138.27900.
