Aso: Will tell regional banks to pursue reforms

Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso told the media he will make the recommendation for regional banks to start reforms in order to make their business model "more sustainable."

A reduction in the number of banks through mergers would be one of the things to be considered, Aso, who concurrently serves as a minister of finance, said but added it is far from the only option left on the table.

"It's becoming harder for regional banks to maintain the current business model given a dwindling population,” he explained.
