ATP fines Britain's LTA for Russian, Belarusian players ban

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) on Wednesday fined Britain's Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) £820,000 for banning Russian and Belarusian players from this year's grasscourt events held before Wimbledon in the wake of the Ukraine crisis.

Commenting on the fine, LTA expressed its disappointment, noting that the ATP failed to acknowledge "the exceptional circumstances created by Russia's invasion of Ukraine," as well as the ensuing response of the UK and sporting community. UK Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan called the decision a "wrong move," saying the organization negatively impacted the "domestic game."

The Wimbledon committee also joined in the ban in April, saying that the decision was taken to limit Russia’s global influence, which led to the tournament being stripped of ranking points.
