Austin, generals warned Biden against Afghanistan pullout - report

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin (pictured left) and several military commanders advised President Joe Biden against a complete pullout of Afghanistan but he decided to ignore their warnings, the Wall Street Journal reported citing sources close to the matter.

According to the report, Gen. Frank McKenzie, the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, Gen. Austin Miller, who leads NATO forces in Afghanistan, and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had urged Biden to keep the currently stationed 2,500 in Afghanistan and "stepping up diplomacy to try to cement a peace agreement." Austin is said to have cautioned Biden that withdrawing troops would put an end to Washington's insurance policy for maintaining some stability in Afghanistan.

Earlier in the week, Biden announced American forces will begin their withdrawal from Afghanistan on May 1 and will completely leave the country by September 11.
