Australia: China not giving any strategic reassurance

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles (pictured) accused China of not providing the international community with "any strategic reassurance."

"China is engaging in the largest conventional military build-up since the Second World War. And this is happening without an explanation of its strategic purpose," Marles said at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Still, he also admitted that both countries have been trying to improve their bilateral relations. "We value a productive relationship with China. And we have sought to stabilize this relationship after a difficult period. These are important steps forward, which China and Australia have taken together," he noted.
