Australia takes China to WTO over wine tariffs

Australia has decided to file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over its dispute with China over the latter's decision to slap tariffs on Australian wine imports.

According to the government in Canberra, the decision to take Beijing to the WTO was made after "extensive consultation with Australia's winemakers." However, it added that Australia remains "open to engaging directly with China to resolve this issue."

Beijing initially imposed preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on Australian wine imports in late 2020. In March of this year, the country confirmed the duties, which go as high as 218.4% and are set to last for five years.
