Australia to request to join EU-China WTO dispute

Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan stated on Saturday that Australia will request to join the consultations in the trade dispute between the European Union and China as it "has a substantial interest in the issues raised." The EU initiated a procedure before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China on Thursday for its discriminatory trade practices against Lithuania.

"Australia opposes the use of economic coercion and discriminatory and restrictive trade practices which undermine the rules-based international trading system and cause economic harm. We are committed to upholding and supporting the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. The WTO dispute settlement system is designed to help members settle their differences in a respectful manner," Tehan said in a statement.
