Australians vote to pick new prime minister

Australians took to the polls on Saturday to choose their new government, and effectively, a new prime minister in an election that is marked by issues like climate change, the economy, healthcare and living costs.

The two main candidates to head Australia's next government are conservative incumbent Prime Minister Scott Morrison (pictured right) and Labor head Bill Shorten (pictured left). Opinion polls published the day before the vote favored Shorten to win, but a close race is expected.

Australia picks its leader every three years, but no prime minister served a full term since 2007.
