Austria opens investigation into Amazon trade practices

The Austrian Federal Competition Authority (BWB) announced on Thursday that it has initiated investigation against Inc. for the alleged infringements of local and European competition laws. The proceedings were raised due to multiple retailers' complaints and will be conducted in cooperation with Germany's Federal Cartel Office, which started its own process against the same company in November 2018.

The probe will examine if Amazon abused its dominant market position in regards to its platform users. The antitrust watchdog claimed that the tech giant discriminated against its retailers in order to favor its own products. BWB announced that the investigation will include a market survey.

"The outcome might be commitments, an application for a fine or an application for termination of infringements to the Court. However, the results of the examination must be awaited before taking next steps,” Director General of the BWB Theodor Thanner said.
