Austrian spy suspect confesses - report

Austrian former colonel that was arrested earlier this week confessed to being a Russian spy, local media reported on Saturday, citing a Defense Ministry source. According to the press, the Austrian officer provided information to the Russians for a payment of €300,000. The suspect worked inside the country's Defense Ministry and had access to sensitive information and high-ranking officials, the report added.

The ex-colonel was arrested over his alleged transfer of classified information about the migration crisis, the Austrian military aircraft and artillery systems to Russian military intelligence services since the late 1990s.

Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed Austria should have contacted Moscow directly to voice its suspicions before making the espionage allegations public and insisted Russia does not know anything about the retired officer suspected of spying.
