Barclay signs order ending EU law in UK

Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay (pictured) signed on Sunday legislation to repeal the European Communities Act, effectively ending EU law in Britain after 31 October. He said the signing sends a "clear signal to the people of this country that there is no turning back."

"We are leaving the EU as promised on 31 October, whatever the circumstances - delivering on the instructions given to us in 2016," he added.

Speaking to The Times, Deputy Chairman of the European Research Group and MP Steve Baker claimed the move "is absolutely totemic." "It shows a transformation in the approach, that Boris Johnson is willing to leave on a fixed date with no question of extension. It’s the do-or-die pledge in black and white. It’s not merely symbolic," according to Baker.

Earlier this week, Downing Street insisted that Prime Minister Boris Johnson does want a deal with Brussels, but remains intent on leaving the bloc on October 31.
