Barr justifies investigating Russia probe

United States Attorney General William Barr defended on Friday his decision to investigate the origins of the decision made by officials of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to launch a probe into alleged Russian meddling in 2016 US presidential elections.

"Just like we need to ensure that foreign actors don’t influence the outcome of our elections, we need to ensure that the government doesn’t use its powers to put a thumb on the scale," Barr told the Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this week, the attorney general reportedly appointed US attorney for the state of Connecticut John Durham to conduct an inquiry into the origins of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe which has been a subject of intense debate, especially since President Donald Trump decided to assert executive privilege in order to block Congress from gaining access to the full report on the investigation.
