Barry weakens to tropical storm, makes landfall

Maximum sustained winds slowed to below 75 miles or 121 kilometers per hour on Saturday as the center of Hurricane Barry reached Louisiana. The weakening makes it a still dangerous tropical storm. It was upgraded by the National Hurricane Center a few hours before as the state and neighboring Mississippi conducted emergency preparations.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards attempted to calm citizens by saying that "some overtopping" of a levee in Myrtle Grove wasn't on the Mississippi River but that it "points further south." More than 77,000 customers are without power in his state.
