Beijing passes Hong Kong security bill

China's National People's Congress approved the controversial new national security bill for Hong Kong on Thursday.

Today's voting was a part of the final session of this year's national legislature gathering, with 2,878 votes in favor, one vote against and six abstentions. According to earlier reports by the Chinese media, the law will become effective from August. It is also expected not to include the option of potential extradition of offenders to mainland China for trial.

The resolution has caused protests in the city and further tensions between Beijing and Washington, with United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying yesterday that his department no longer sees Hong Kong as autonomous from China.
