Beijing should reverse 'outrageous' HK action - McGovern, Rubio

James McGovern, currently chairing the United States Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), along with the agency's co-chair, Senator Marco Rubio (pictured) issued a statement condemning China's actions regarding Hong Kong.

The two referred to the national security bill drafted by Beijing and submitted to the country's National People's Congress (NPC) for a vote as "arbitrarily," noting the US stands with Hong Kong on the issue. "These actions push Hong Kong's autonomy to the breaking point," the statement read, accusing the nation of violating the government's obligations under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.

"We call on the PRC government to reverse its outrageous and unacceptable action and uphold its international obligations to protect Hong Kong's autonomy and the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people," McGovern and Rubio wrote. Additionally, they urged the Trump administration to lead a global coalition to protect America’s interests as well as the people of Hong Kong, adding if China were to proceed with undermining the city's autonomy the US has to reassess its relationship with the administrative region.
