Belarus formally charges Sofia Sapega

Russian national Sofia Sapega, detained in Belarus in May after the plane she was travelling on was forced to land in Minsk, has been charged with "incitement to hostility" according to reports on Sunday.

The charge carries a six-year minimum prison term according to the Criminal Code of Belarus. Sapega was travelling with her partner Roman Protasevich, a Belarussian opposition figure, who was also detained.

Belarus has come under fire from the United Kingdom and Europe over the incident, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously describing it as a "hijacking" and an attack on democracy.
