Belarus looking to expand its status in SCO - Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a meeting on Saturday that Minsk is counting on Moscow's support in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The leader of Belarus said his country is looking to expand its status in the so-called Shanghai pact, which right now comprises of eight-member nations including China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Belarus is one of four Observer States interested in acceding to full membership in the transcontinental political alliance, next to Afghanistan, Iran, and Mongolia.
