Belarus was forced to land plane due to Hamas threat - official

Belarusian Transport Ministry's Aviation Department Director Artem Sikorsky stated on Monday Minsk landed the Ryanair flight, forcefully grounded at the city airport, after learning that someone, who claimed to be from Palestine's Hamas, is planning to blow it up above Vilnius.

Sikorsky remarked the grounding was an "emergency landing" and that the alleged perpetrators presented several political demands in relation to the recently concluded clashes between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza Strip.

The forceful landing of Ryanair's flight, which was going from Athens to Vilnius, caused outrage in the West, which linked it to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's alleged attempts to detain opposition activist Roman Protasevich. The United States called for a probe into the event, while the United Kingdom warned it will hold Lukashenko responsible for the matter.
