Belgium confirms first case of new COVID variant

Belgian health authorities confirmed on Friday they have identified the first case of the new COVID-19 variant in the country and in Europe. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (pictured) stated the person in question, who was unvaccinated, tested positive on November 22 after returning from abroad and called on the public "not to panic."

Belgium has not yet announced a suspension of travel from southern Africa in relation to the variant, unlike a number of other European nations. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the government is introducing other measures, such as a 10-day quarantine for Belgian residents returning from the region, as well as a ban on entry for non-residents coming from the south of Africa, although he did not specify which African countries will be concerned.
