Biden, Congress leaders talk preventing rail shutdown

United States President Joe Biden met on Tuesday with Congressional leaders to discuss ways to prevent a rail shutdown prompted by unions not accepting the deal brokered by the White House two months.

According to a statement released on the White House's website, Biden hosted today senior legislators Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, and Kevin McCarthy in Roosevelt Room. The meeting comes after worker unions announced possible strikes from December 5 if Congress doesn't act to allow them the option to take leave to recover from an illness or care for a sick family member.

Yesterday, the president urged legislators to pass the Tentative Agreement between operators and railroad workers and avoid a "crippling national rail shutdown." If adopted, all 12 rail labor unions will have to ratify their contracts by the end of next week to avoid a shutdown.
