BioNTech: Can make new COVID vaccine in 6 weeks

BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin said on Tuesday that he wasn't sure if the company's COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed with Pfizer is also effective against the newly discovered coronavirus strain, as the new variant has nine possible mutations.

Sahin estimated that BioNTech would need two weeks to receive the needed data, but noted that, scientifically, it is "highly likely" the shot provides the necessary immune response. The company could develop a new vaccine within six weeks, Sahin asserted, adding that it is questionable how health regulators would view the new jab.

The Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine candidate was the first to receive approval for emergency use in the western world. So far, the rollout process has begun in the United States, the United Kingdom and several other countries, while the European Union yesterday gave the green light for mass inoculation.
