Bitcoin rises over 4.5%, trades at $8,600

The world's most popular digital currency traded at $8,600 on Friday, recovering from the losses recorded earlier in the week. Earlier in the month, reports indicated that tech giant Facebook Inc. is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency. Facebook reportedly approached a number of companies and financial institutions about joining an independent foundation that would assist in governing the potential cryptocurrency.

Meanwhile, last month, AT&T became the first major telecommunications company to accept payments in bitcoin. AT&T's customers, following the decision, will be able to pay their phone bills in cryptocurrency, using payment service provider BitPay.

Bitcoin increased by 4.53% at 5:16 pm ET to sell for $8,600. At the same time, bitcoin cash fell 0.22% to change hands for $411.040.
