Blinken reaffirms commitment to Australia

United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken strongly reaffirmed America’s commitment to its alliance with Australia in an address to the media in Washington on Thursday. Speaking in the context of the recently announced AUKUS defence partnership, Blinken was joined by Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Australian counterparts Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Peter Dutton.

Discussing the threat of China, Blinken stated that “Australia will not back down” and that the “United States will not leave Australia alone ... in the face of these threats,” making reference to their “unshakeable alliance” and pledging that the two nations will continue to “work together for the next 70 years and beyond.”

Austin spoke of the two countries’ “unbreakable alliance … united by common values and common interest” and stated that assisting Australia in the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines was crucial for “integrated deterrence in the region … in defence of shared security interests.”

Australian FM Marise Payne also touched on pressure from China and remarked that “United States leadership in the Indo-Pacific remains undisputed.”
