Boris Johnson says he will run for Tory leadership

Former United Kingdom Foreign Secretary and one of the key figures of the Leave campaign said on Thursday that he plans to run for the position of the Conservative Party leader. "Of course I’m going to go for it," Johnson told BBC's Huw Edwards at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) event in Manchester.

In April, hardline Brexiter and leader of the European Research Group Jacob Rees-Mogg stated that Johnson is "leading in the field" to replace Prime Minister Theresa May as the Tory leader. May vowed to step down if her Brexit deal is passed in Parliament but media reports claimed she could face a confidence vote if she fails to resign before the summer, regardless of the outcome of the parliamentary vote on the withdrawal agreement.

Johnson was the top favorite to take over as Tory leader and UK prime minister after David Cameron resigned following the Brexit referendum in 2016 but decided not to run for the position at the time.
