Borrell tells Zarif EU still wants to save JCPOA

European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell (pictured) met Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New Delhi on Thursday and assured him that the EU is still interested in saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from 2015.

According to a statement by the EU, Borrell told Zarif that preserving the nuclear deal is "now more important than ever" due to the heightened tensions in the Middle East. "Both partners agreed to remain in close touch and continue their engagement in the coming weeks.," the EU added.

Earlier, Zarif slammed the European signatories of the JCPOA for triggering a dispute resolution mechanism following Iran's decision to completely scale back its commitments over the United States' killing of Quds Force head Qassem Soleimani. After UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested replacing the JCPOA with a new "Trump deal" if it cannot be saved, Borrell insisted the existing agreement does "not have an alternative."
