Brazil's Supreme Court confirms Lula's sentence annulment

The Supreme Court of Brazil upheld its earlier decision to overturn former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's conviction for corruption. Last month, a judge on the country's highest court ruled that the criminal sentence is invalid.

The confirmation of the ruling comes after the Prosecutor's Office filed an appeal. Seven out of 11 justices voted to confirm the annulment. Lula was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2017. He was released in 2019 but was unable to run for office again. With his sentence overturned, Lula will be able to run for president in the 2022 election against the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.
