British firms ask for extra state aid worth £7.6B

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said on Tuesday it needs a further £7.6 billion ($10.3 billion) of emergency government help as they cannot wait for finance minister Rishi Sunak's (pictured) final decision on more support for businesses.

CBI Director-General Tony Danker stated the money is needed in order "to finish the job," because "now it would be a very odd time to end that support."

The CBI suggested extending the broad retention scheme until June, together with targeted support for jobs in sectors most impacted by the pandemic.
