California permits Waymo to drive passengers

Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving subsidiary Waymo LLC acquired permission from Californian regulators to transport passengers in its autonomous vehicles, Tech Crunch reported on Tuesday. Waymo is licensed under the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot program.

The approval from the California Public Utilities Commission will allow passengers to South Bay region of the Los Angeles. Even though Waymo is just one of 60 companies permitted to operate their self-driving vehicles in California, it is the second to receive a permit for the transportation of people.

Recently, Waymo announced was partnering with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to "explore all aspects of driverless mobility services for passengers and deliveries in France and Japan," bringing its technology to a global stage.
