California to require 50% of trucks to be electric from 2035

California plans to require at least half of heavy-duty vehicles sold state-wide to be fully electric by 2035, according to a report published by the New York Times on Friday.

However, the federal government will first have to provide a legal waiver to California so authorities are able to step ahead of federal standards, which will effectively push California as a leader in the United States when it comes to eliminating carbon emissions. The Biden administration will provide the state with legal authority to push these changes, the report claimed.

California already introduced legislation requiring all new passenger vehicles to be all-electric from the same year. The Biden administration previously pledged to halve gas emissions nationwide by the end of this decade and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
