Canada greenlights Pfizer jab as booster for children

Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) released a statement on Friday saying it recommends using the Pfizer-BioNTech's jab as a booster dose for children aged 5-11, after the authorization from Health Canada. Pfizer BioNTech's vaccine is the first one to receive approval as a booster dose for this age group. The booster dose will be offered six months after completion of primary immunization.

"NACI continues to recommend that a two-dose primary series of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to children 5 to 11 years of age who do not have contraindications to the vaccine, with a dosing interval of at least 8 weeks between the first and second dose," the statement said.

Children who are moderately to severely immunocompromized should receive a primary series of three doses of an mRNA vaccine, using an interval of 4 to 8 weeks between each dose, NACI recommended.
