Car registrations in UK at lowest level since 1996

Registration of vehicles in the United Kingdom plummeted by 24.3% on a monthly basis in June, the lowest level since 1996, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said on Tuesday. According to the released data, 140,958 new vehicles were registered that month.

However, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued an upward trend, with a 14.6% increase in volume, and plug-in vehicles accounted for more than one-fifth (21.6%) of new cars registered.

"Given the ongoing shortages of essential components, exacerbated by pandemic restrictions in China, global vehicle production has struggled to keep up with demand throughout 2022. New car registrations for the year to date have fallen by 11.9% to 802,079 units – the weakest first half year performance since 1992, bar 2020," reads the report.
