CDC panel okays Pfizer boosters for over 65s

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory group unanimously voted in favor of distributing a booster shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to older Americans and nursing home residents on Thursday, paving the way for the agency to give its final approval.

The agency’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices endorsed distributing the third dose to people 65 and older. It has yet to decide whether to recommend the shots for adults with medical conditions that put them at high risk, and those more frequently exposed to the virus, such as frontline health workers, employees of nursing homes and prisons, and all other workers considered essential.

While not binding, the recommendation is expected to be accepted by the CDC as early as Thursday night. The announcement comes a day after the Food and Drug Administration granted emergency authorization for Pfizer shots to be administered to patients six months after completing the first two doses.
